Just before his death in 1970, the psychologist Abraham Maslow, best known for his theory of psychological health expressed as a pyramid hierarchy of needs, replaced the top level of self-actualisation with that of self-transcendence. The term ‘transcendence’ has been adopted by many from the Shamanic to the transhumanists but I prefer this definition: ‘Transcendence refers to the very highest and most inclusive or holistic levels of human consciousness, behaving and relating, as ends rather than means, to oneself, to significant others, to human beings in general, to other species, to nature, and to the cosmos’. In an Anthropocene Age in which we are changing the very surface of our planet but also being freed from the shackles of jobs created during the Industrial Revolution, I am a great believer that it is through connecting old methods and thinking and new, which will not only save the world our physical bodies inhabit, but also allow the evolution of the heightened state of interconnected consciousness known as Transcendence; something which has long inspired my art practice.
